Bringing Yoga and Meditation into our Daily Life
based on the practices of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra
16-day course over 4 months including 3 retreat periods from May - August 2017
The Vigyana Bhairava Tantra is a profound text written over 1,000 years ago in Kashmir. Although composed in a different time and culture, its timeless message speaks to us in the present day as much as ever before. Its sublime and yet very practical teachings give 112 different techniques, called dharanas, which we can utilise to bring a more refined quality into our daily lives which can in turn transform our self-identity.
We live, no doubt, in a fast-paced and busy world with never enough time to fulfil all our responsibilities let alone practise yoga. Many yoga practitioners say, ‘I want to practise even a little but from early morning to late at night I am completely occupied with the tasks of daily living. As such I have neither the time nor energy.’ The teachings of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra offer us solutions that can transform this dilemma into an opportunity to go deeper. It tells us uncompromisingly, even when we can’t find time, let every situation:
- be considered an opportunity to practise
- help us to be present in the Now
- remind us of our deeper aim in life and what we are in essence.
During this 16-day course, spread over 3 retreat periods through the spring and summer of 2017, we will explore and practise selected techniques from this text, some of which we will do outside in nature – in touch with the earth, air, water and open sky.
Learning these practices under guidance and deepening our personal experience of them, will give an appreciation of the principles involved. We are then empowered to apply these same principles in the crucible of our daily lives. In this way, instead of being an obstacle, day to day life becomes the means of going deeper in our self-understanding and our capacity to live life with meaning, joy and wisdom.
The course will be based on Swami Nishchalananda’s profound interpretation of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra text, and his capacity to translate the teachings in an accessible way for the modern western world. You will be given systematic guided practice whilst within the ashram, together with ongoing support for your subsequent personal practice at home. In so doing, you will discover more of your hidden potential, bring a greater fulfilment to your life, and deepen your realisation of your fundamental identity.
This course is designed for both sincere practitioners who want to deepen their practice and for yoga teachers who want to be able to impart the knowledge and practices of the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra to their students.
Course Dates: May 9-14 2017; June 21-25 2017; August 16-23 2017
